If you're plugged in via USB you don't need to use any third party program for the controller to work but if you're using bluetooth dualsensex set to dualshock 4 emulation makes it work properly for me. Source: 12 months ago

Xbox Controller is good but I would suggest you to go for DualSense 5. You need to install DS5 Software for non Steam games. DualSense has Better Haptic Feedback and better ergonomic design for long run gameplay. Source: about 1 year ago

I’m eager to try this out, but you might also want to check out Steermouse[1], which is a utility it took me years longer to discover than it should have. I’m not sure how it stacks up to this open source project, but it’s definitely been worth the license cost to me over the years.
