I've never tried it but DeskGap lets you build a desktop app like Electron, but it uses your existing installed version of Chrome instead of bundling it's own Chrome engine inside the app so it keeps it much more lightweight. For the record, I find the teaching IDE BlueJ very easy to use and try things out in JavaFX. It is very light to use as it isn't designed as a normal IDE but you can simply write a JavaFX class and right-click to run as it. Source: about 3 years ago
