  We're commonly doing this with logging, using services such as Loggly or DataDog. We're using managed databases, be it on AWS, Heroku or database-vendor-specific solutions.   Checksums are better long term. However a nice GUI program: Beyond Compare from Scooter Software is a native Windows app that will compare entire subdirectories or even entire disks and will show a GUI of changes / mods / missing / extra files.
