I believe that most people use Blockbench. The program that the official Hytale editor is made from, Craftstudio, is available for free, but development for it was dropped when it was integrated into Hytale. Source: about 3 years ago

I'm not sure if your 4.5yo is old enough to try Scratch[1] but nothing is too young these days. My elder got into Scratch around that time. My four year old was kicked out of his preschool class, and the school recommended I set him up with applied behavioral analysis.
