I think the syntax is john --wordlist=, but I sometimes get that error and don't know why, you can try crackstation.net or hashcat. I forgot, but I think one time I got the error on one vm and tried on another kali vm and it worked.. IDK., but yeah if john doesn't work use another option like crackstation.net. On aircrack-ng.org they say most of Intel wireless adapters do the job.when I type iwconfig in Kali's terminal I got info about lo, ethernet (eth0) and not about wlan0, altough I am not sure if this is not caused by the fact that I use it on VMware. Source: about 2 years ago
