Try running a drive test on the drive. It's possible it's bad (yes, it can come bad even if it's brand new, actually new hardware tends to have a higher fail rate then midlife span hardware). You can use a tool like HDDScan. Source: 6 months ago

The issue is that files became corrupted, resulting in it needing to check the file system. If you have a hard drive enclosure, I would recommend using the enclosure to connect the drive to a computer, and running a drive diagnostic utility.
