The other way is using a token, you gain by converting a PAK in CSSM, I think you can add device and then use PAK to get a token you install on device. The other - perhaps more important - reason to provide a laptop is data risk management. If the laptop is yours, you can force encryption, backups, and install endpoint security tools, which allow you to remotely wipe it if lost/stolen/fired.
