Don't just accept a frontline agent saying it can't be refunded. Lodge a formal complaint and ask to escalate the issue. May also be worth lodging a case through resolver.co.uk. Good to brush up on your rights under the consumer rights act before hand. Some time before when I couldn't reach FedEx support I started a resolver.co.uk case for FedEx. And they replied to that case that the package is lost. 30 minutes after that they replied to the case that the package has been returned to sender, past perfect. Source: over 1 year ago
Option 2: Given that they have already said they can't do anything while dealing with you, could just go straight to writing a complaint through https://resolver.co.uk/. You need to make an official complaint (or two) before you can contact the FOS. They have 8 weeks to resolve the issue before the FOS will deal with it. resolver.co.uk will walk you through the process. What you expect them to do beyond pulling their thumbs from their arses is for you to research. HL volunteered £150 for similar. The whole system needs a shake up IMHO, but patience is a virtue.
