Just go to the .net core learning section. What anybody says here are just opinions, even your coworker's opinion is just that, an opinion.. I don't agree with them either as .net core 6 MVC pattern is recommended on their docs to support separation of concern patterns, I personally like using .Net core MVC on simple apps and you can use it with Razor/Blazor... While the editor seems to old fashioned there isn't anything particularly wrong in using it for learning. Alternatively you can propose to your teacher about https://visualstudio.microsoft.com/vs/express/ . IMO editor is not a big factor when we are talking about high school learning.
