Not when you control for political affiliation. Conservatives tend to be more knowledgeable on controversial issues, partly because they also tend to consume news from sources on both sides. There are browser extensions like Reddit Check or What Hacker News Says which will show Reddit and/or HN comments on any website you visit. So it's very similar in functionality.
