I was a philosophy major and ran arch in college without too many issues. The main thing I needed was a doc/docx compatible word processor for submitting my essays to turnitin.com (though I believe I was simply able to email or turn in a physical copy for a lot of the them) and LibreOffice sufficed for that. This works for most schools and colleges as most teacher's arent given turnitin.com which is way more accurate and is what professors and universities use themselves.
