It will be a while. As to watering, lift the container, if it is light, it needs water. I do that a lot! And I agree, I've done this over 35 years and watering at the start is a big pain. I really hate the round pellet peat pots myself. Never ever had any luck with them. I like the styrofoam cell systems a lot. Biodome from Parks for example. I grow in containers, for many years. Peppers need 1/4 sand mixed in and don't fertilize till they are flowering. If they are growing one stem, pinch off the top to get them to branch at about 9".
