Obviously I’m committed to the genre since I’m here! I used to follow adventure game developers and fans when I was on twitter. I now lurk on a few discords. Unfortunately the review and news site I’ve relied on since I was a child, Adventure Gamers, is in some funding/ownership flux, but it’s still online. Adventure Game Hotspot was started recently, perhaps to fill a similar space. I also find pretty good... Source: 12 months ago
Other details: I am pretty sure this would have been a free download of some kind-not a paid game. It also would have likely been an independent project. I lived on AGS games/Big Blue Cup and adventuregamers.com in those days-playing all those freeware point and click type games...so I probably stumbled across this somewhere around there. You had to write the intelligence of a robot/tank in a C-like language of these game development software. The bottom line is two of these programs competed against each other. If I remember correctly these battles took place in a recurring tournament and you could win a license of the game developement software, or maybe nothing. The only one I found in a 2-minute search that is similar to this is Robocode... Source: about 2 years ago
One of the first incantations of this idea that I encountered, when I had just started working at my first corporate job back in the day, was Robocode ( https://robocode.sourceforge.io/ ) - it was great fun, and I see it's still going. - Source: Hacker News / about 2 years ago
