Honestly the first thing you may want to look at is AWS Storage Gateway -- that is a "blessed and supported" file server (NFS or SMB) that has local cache storage and uses S3 on the back end so you can benefit from inexpensive storage costs and the various auto-tiering and lifecycle things you can do with S3 based data.
