  • How does a computer/calculator compute logarithms?
Good article. I, too, am fascinated by calculators and how they work, especially the HP scientific RPN calculators. So much so, that I ended up developing this: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.limpidfox..... - Source: Hacker News / about 19 hours ago
  • Ask HN: Who has had a successful PWA product?
Thanks! Word of mouth, mainly. Posted it on Reddit back then, things like that. It grew organically from that. Also, although it’s far from being on top results on SERP (search engine result pages), some people do find it that way. Also: because it is so lightweight, it was included in the Moya app ( - Source: Hacker News / 3 days ago

  • A most profound video game: a good cognitive aid for research
Also available on Google Play Store [1], and it successfully derailed my sleep plans last night. Really breaks your expectations of "I move the character around" within minutes. It reminds me a bit of the card game Fluxx, where every card you play changes the rules. [1] https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.hempuli.baba. - Source: Hacker News / 7 days ago

    1) a scientific calculator with history and variables with a UI similar to https://sourceforge.net/projects/alt1-calculator/ that also can do units like https://qalculate.github.io/ 2) a tiny text chat direct message program that is similarly as easily accessible at Atl1 3) a minimalist dock of as many instances you would like similar to https://punklabs.com/rocketdock, and like where WIN opens the start menu, WIN... • GNU Units
I personally use Qalculate (https://qalculate.github.io/), specifically their CLI version for this purpose. I'm not sure how well it compares to GNU Units, but it works well enough for my needs; and it's fairly simple using English-like syntax. - Source: Hacker News / 11 months ago
  • Ask HN: Do you still use a hand held/desktop calculator?
On the terminal, I use `qalc`[1]. It's a nice natural language calculator that does arithmetic, solves quadratic equations/linear systems, does unit conversions and even a bit of calculus. Combine it with a cli graphing tool and you can do pretty cool things. Anything more complicated I'm probably ok with latency, so I open up wolframalpha and enter it there, again, in natural language. [1]... - Source: Hacker News / 11 months ago
