  • Students, what features would you like to see on Windows 12?
    1) a scientific calculator with history and variables with a UI similar to https://sourceforge.net/projects/alt1-calculator/ that also can do units like https://qalculate.github.io/ 2) a tiny text chat direct message program that is similarly as easily accessible at Atl1 3) a minimalist dock of as many instances you would like similar to https://punklabs.com/rocketdock, and like where WIN opens the start menu, WIN... • Paint on Windows is getting layers and transparency support
Qalculate is my go-to for cross platform calculator that is useful and is not limited to the most basic +-*/ operations. https://qalculate.github.io/. - Source: Hacker News / 8 months ago
  • Keisan Casio is shutting down

  • GNU Units
I personally use Qalculate (https://qalculate.github.io/), specifically their CLI version for this purpose. I'm not sure how well it compares to GNU Units, but it works well enough for my needs; and it's fairly simple using English-like syntax. - Source: Hacker News / 9 months ago
  • Ask HN: Do you still use a hand held/desktop calculator?
On the terminal, I use `qalc`[1]. It's a nice natural language calculator that does arithmetic, solves quadratic equations/linear systems, does unit conversions and even a bit of calculus. Combine it with a cli graphing tool and you can do pretty cool things. Anything more complicated I'm probably ok with latency, so I open up wolframalpha and enter it there, again, in natural language. [1]... - Source: Hacker News / 9 months ago

  • The search for easier safe systems programming
    > "Systems programming" is hard, and should be hard, for reasons unrelated to the programming language used. The question is: is it harder than it needs to be due to accidental complexity[1] in programming language design. TFA argues that there is still some accidental complexity in the design of Rust that leaves room for an "easier" language that still allows the level of control needed for a systems language.... - Source: Hacker News / about 7 hours ago
  • TikTok Sues U.S. Government over Law Forcing Sale or Ban
It’s easy to dream up scenarios from something as simple as the way that China treats GPS: in addition to the regular block-google-maps-from-showing-military-bases they also use an entirely different system whose purpose is only to occlude real locations (https://medium.com/@anastasia.bizyayeva/every-map-of-china-is-wrong-bc2bce145db2) TikTok harvests the very thing china occludes. - Source: Hacker News / about 23 hours ago

  • An infinite canvas for code exploration
Great idea, and I was excited to try it (and even pay for it!) until the requirement to sign up and the hijacked back button. Also, in my Firefox, your white box as a background appears transparent and so your text is just on top of a _very_ noisy background. On the missing Terms of Service, you have the Data Use notice, but it essentially describes how you're using our email, not any code that we would need to... - Source: Hacker News / 2 days ago
