I ran into something similar to this with the 3scale.net api gateway. They had a modified version of nginx that talked to their backend api and downloaded and cache'd the customer info and used that as part of the api proxy. We know that CloudTrail is the bare minimum service to activate on a newly created AWS Account to track all activities on your AWS account. It helps, but this will not alert you to suspicious activities by itself.
