  Personally, I think layout is more important. How text is formatted, font size, layout, how prose is structured, that is what attracts me to a new book or module. There are guides out there for page design, like here. And here is a good resource on typography. But even then, you don't need that if your content is good enough.   This is one of the reasons that pushes me towards create a document first with HTML, then style it with CSS. If needs be – interactivity —, add a bit of JS. Space can look good when you're designing on a 27" screen, but on the iPad or the MBA, it is wasteful.
