  • Mushroom pickers urged: Avoid Amazon foraging books, appear to be written by AI
If you're willing to spending a bit more on a book to support your local bookstore, please use something like https://uk.bookshop.org instead of shopping on Amazon. I originally heard about Bookshop right here on HN years ago and have been using them since. It's a network of mostly independent bookstores that don't offer print-on-demand service which means you're less likely to get scammed by AI-generated spam. - Source: Hacker News / 8 months ago
  • Amazon has turned in to Ali Express
Where possible, high street shops. Otherwise Etsy or Ebay. For books there's bookshop.org. Source: 12 months ago
  • Amazon to close Book Depository online shop
Https://uk.bookshop.org/ allows you to buy from independent bookshops in the UK, however only a portion of the sales go back to them. You could use it as a way of getting in touch directly to the inde shop? Source: about 1 year ago
  • BOOK DEPOSITORY IS CLOSING!

  • what's a good online shop to order a kids book?
Waterstones is a major UK bookshop chain with an online store. If you want to support local independent bookshops, use https://uk.bookshop.org or https://www.hive.co.uk and get the book delivered to a bookshop near your godchild's parents/guardians. Source: about 1 year ago
  • Where do you buy the books you can't find in local stores?
OP, there's a UK website for it, too: Https://uk.bookshop.org/. Source: about 1 year ago
  • Finding the Original UK Versions of Hearstopper and other AO Books in North America.
I live in the US and ordered UK versions of the novellas from http://www.bookdepository.org (free international shipping). This used to be one of the shops recommended on Alice Oseman's site, but it appears to have been replaced with http://uk.bookshop.org when I check now. I had no difficulties with Book Depository. • General Discussion Thread - December 12, 2022
Haha yeah you get no guarantees on edition with wob. You will get something with the same title by the same author but that's it! Sometimes the content is not even the same, e.g. There are a few Hedda Gabler and other plays with the 'other plays' being different in each edition. But usually I don't care what edition I get and it's worth it to save money and not support Jeff Bezos. Take a look at uk.bookshop.org as... Source: over 1 year ago
  • What are some really ethical brands?
Https://uk.bookshop.org/ for books. They act as an aggregator for lots of local independent bookshops. Source: over 1 year ago
  • Website that catalogues indépendant bookstores and the Books they have available ?
Bookshop.org is a popular online selling platform for independent booksellers in the UK. Most bookshops don't have their entire catalogue on there though. Source: over 1 year ago
  • what are your amazon alternatives?
Bookshop is a great alternative to hive, same range of books at the same price, but they give a greater cut to independent stores. Not sure how much more but our local store owner said it's significant and if we can swap to please do so. Source: over 1 year ago
  • Has anyone in UK managed to get hold of a copy of Nona the Ninth from a non-Amazon source? [general]
Could this work? Ive only used the US version but IIRC it lets you buy online from small bookstores https://uk.bookshop.org/. Source: over 1 year ago
  • The reason people don't shop at bookstores: The first Jack Reacher book is $17 at Barnes and Noble, while the exact same book is $7.99 on Amazon
It works in the UK - I've been using https://uk.bookshop.org/ for a while, great site (and our local independent bookshop is part of the network!). Source: over 1 year ago

  • Ladybird Tales
Ladybird Books is still an active publisher so the classic books are being reprinted all the time. Bookshop.org lists independent bookshops across the UK, perhaps there’s one near where you’ll be staying. Even if they don’t have it in stock, they might be able to order it in for you. Source: about 2 years ago
  • Waterstones acquires Blackwell’s, the UK’s biggest independent bookseller
If you don't mind ordering online, uk.bookshop.org and hive.co.uk support independent bookshops. Source: about 2 years ago
  • So this is now happening apparently
I think Amazon has given us all unrealistic expectations re: how fast things are delivered, but yes a fortnight is too long. Even worse, the College libraries have had to wait months for books to be delivered! Partly due to huge technical issues and subsequent rebuilding they've had to do in the past few months, but there is only so many delays customers will tolerate. Now that they're going to be part of... Source: about 2 years ago
