  • What is the best wearos watch according to google? :)
Of course it's the Watch 5 Pro. Go to android.com it's even used in a promote video lol. Pixel Watch is just a joke. Source: about 3 years ago
  • Surface Duo 2 November Update Build 2022.817.23
I've been running with it for a short-while now. Need to go to android.com and see what fixes they made. Source: over 3 years ago
  • Jetpack Compose: Horrifically slow in text input?
As a follow-up, if jetpack can be used to build real and performant apps, does anyone have a good recommendation for a tutorial? I was trying to follow the demos linked of android.com, but it seemed as if there were vast differences between what they were saying to do, and what was in a newly bootstrapped project and the gradle files. • Anyone else having Malwarebytes say Google.com is malware?
This seems to be effecting all of Google's products. I can't get into any of my G-Suite sites, GMail accounts, google.com, android.com, etc. From any device that has Malwarebytes installed. The constant popups from Malwarebytes are annoying, but on a positive note, it is letting me see just how many apps on my computer phone in to Google. NZXT is the biggest offender, and seems to be constantly hitting up... Source: almost 4 years ago
  • Why do none of the major distros have KDE Plasma as default?
I wish I could go to android.com download the latest ROM and install it myself, like I do with Linux, I hate waiting for phone manufacturers to release OS updates and security fixes. Source: almost 4 years ago
  • Shield Experience 11 (build 9.0.2) April 12, 2022
According to the android.com site, the OS itself is done. Source: over 4 years ago
  • Questions about connections at startup
I recently installed LineageOS and I am LOVING IT! Thanks to all the contributers who make this possible. After spending a few days in Lineage and doing some tests I am noticing a few weird domains at startup. I tested this by setting up a DNS filter (NextDNS in this case) and monitoring the connections. There are weird domains connecting to gstatic.com and android.com. Is there any way to change/disable these... Source: over 4 years ago
  • Could someone help me with an application called Android studio, it is for programming but I don't understand it very well?
Looks promising! Is android.com trustworthy? http://android.com looks like the official page of Android. Source: over 4 years ago
  • Pixel 3a - Fastboot does not work - Fastboot Undefined Symbol ExtractEntryToFile
I downloaded the newest version of ADB and Fastboot from android.com. When I say "downloaded" I'm talking about the platform-tools folder and has all the stuff you need. You can see the folder in the screencap I posted earlier. Anyway, this didn't fix the problem. I didn't try running any linux commands that let you install ADB files or Fastboot files however. • Android app development
Do you know Java or Kotlin? Start learning Kotlin even if you know Java. Writing Android apps in Kotlin is easier and requires less code. Google made Android Kotlin first so any changes to the ecosystem and documentation are done in Kotlin first. Kotlin makes even more sense if you start looking for resources outside of android.com and most youtube tutorials being made today are done in Kotlin. Source: almost 5 years ago
  • Why buy a cold wallet over an App?
If my smartphone gets stolen, the thief wont care to look for what apps I own. He will just erase everything and try to sell it for cash. On the other hand, if he breaks into my house and finds the device, he instantly gets access to my crypto and even if I buy a second hardware wallet we will both have the same level of access to my funds (see relevant post on trezor subreddit). My phone on the other hand, I can... Source: about 5 years ago

Summary of the public mentions of Android

The Android operating system remains an influential force in the mobile technology sector, renowned for its widespread adoption in smartphones, IoT devices, and various other electronics. As an open-source project with significant backing from Google, Android has positioned itself as the go-to platform for developers and consumers alike, thanks to its vast app ecosystem, extensive developer support, and robust compatibility across a multitude of hardware platforms.

Public Opinion Overview

  1. Market Dominance and Competition:

    • Android's dominance is underscored by its integration into myriad devices beyond smartphones, such as IoT appliances, cars, and televisions, fostering an expansive user base. However, its market prevalence has sparked discussions about potential monopolistic effects, leading to concerns that such dominance could stifle innovation and healthy competition. Critics argue that while Apple's iOS remains a primary competitor, Android's extensive reach makes it a formidable juggernaut in the field, prompting the search for viable alternatives that emphasize privacy and security.
  2. Alternatives and Customization:

    • Several articles and discussions explore alternatives to Android, motivated by privacy and security considerations. There is interest in open-source operating systems like LineageOS, GrapheneOS, and CalyxOS, which promise enhanced control and customization. Custom ROMs, such as Resurrection Remix, gain popularity for offering users the ability to tailor their Android experience, reinforcing the OS's strength in customization.
  3. Open Source and Proprietary Tensions:

    • While Android is fundamentally open-source, the bundled proprietary software on consumer devices has led some users to question its openness. Consequently, there is a subset of users who prefer completely open-source platforms. The ongoing US-China trade tensions, notably impacting Huawei, highlight the dependence on Google services to optimize Android functionality, amplifying the desire for alternative, self-sustaining ecosystems not reliant on Google.
  4. Technical Adoption and Community Interaction:

    • Android's technical documentation and resources, primarily hosted on Android.com, receive mixed feedback regarding their accessibility and accuracy. The transition to Kotlin as the preferred language for Android app development aims to streamline coding efforts, although developers express varying levels of satisfaction with the available guidance and tutorials. Despite these challenges, the widespread developer and user engagement highlight Android's robust community and support infrastructure.
  5. Security and Maintenance:

    • Platform security is a pertinent concern for Android users, especially with discussions around firmware updates and device compatibility with the latest security measures. The ability to manage and update devices promptly is paramount, as demonstrated by user frustrations with delayed updates from manufacturers. The capacity to "brick" stolen devices through Android.com illustrates efforts to enhance user security in the event of theft.

In conclusion, while Android's reach and versatility continue to attract a broad audience, the public discourse reveals a nuanced landscape where concerns about market dominance, privacy, and customization drive interest in alternative platforms. Android's strength lies in its adaptability and large ecosystem, fostering innovation within and beyond its traditional scope, but also necessitating a continued focus on transparency, openness, and user empowerment.
