Http, due to session stability requirements, sort of needs to keep talking to the same backend server, and if you have a very widely distributed network (like Google) that would be nearly impossible. So sharding the network with multiple IPs that can resolve as "google.com" depending on where you are trying from, and have similar results - but likely not be able to carry the session over, unless there is in place a much wider distributed session store (like google actually has).
