June 30th is approaching - Here's a summary of the popular candidates for an alternative

Tildes Lemmy Jerboa for Lemmy
  1. 1
A non-profit community site driven by its users' interests
Tildes is nice and all but I have no idea why on earth these people don't open up signups because I'm pretty sure they could become a real competitor here.

  2. 2
Federated link aggregator and Reddit alternative built with Rust
Lemmy and kbin and others - If you're really into federated/decentralized Stuff then whatever but for me this is not it. All around terrible user Experience, incredibly laggy and often buggy.

  3. Lemmy
    Pricing:
    • Open Source
I am not trying to gatekeep, I am trying to understand: what issues are "non-techies" having with lemmy, or other federated platforms like mastodon? I have found that it is super easy to get up and started with these, and using them requires no specialized techinical skill. The only issue comes when you are trying to discover new communities and stuff, but that still happens without any special tech knowledge other than being able to browse by all. Is it choosing an instance to sign up with? This isn't that hard, as there are go to instances for both mastodon and lemmy, or you can use something like https://join-lemmy.org. Does it just take too long for you to see other posts from other instances? It hasn't been hard at all, I genuinely don't know what people are perceiving to have a problem with because you just sign up and it works.
