Twitter and Reddit are both single websites owned by large companies. This makes it easy for new users because they can just go to twitter.com or reddit.com to see everything. However, it also means that the companies are more interested in pulling a profit than being a great place for users to interact. Mastodon is a decentralized, open source social network. This is just one part of the network, run by the main developers of the project It is not focused on any particular niche interest - everyone is welcome!

Currently, the biggest Mastodon instance is mastodon.social and the biggest Lemmy instance is lemmy.ml. Of course neither one is as large as Twitter or Reddit. Mastodon had a huge boost in users when Twitter was bought out by Elon and now it's at ~11 million users. Lemmy is currently in the middle of a huge boost in users thanks to Reddit's new 3rd Party app policy, but that still puts it at like ~10,000 users. I'm sure that'll grow even more once the 3rd Party Reddit apps are actually shut down at the end of this month though.
