Discourse seems to be the modern forum software of choice, though I'm not sure a return to a bunch of siloed forums is a great path forward. Lemmy is a decentralized reddit-workalike (Lemmy is to Reddit as Mastodon is to Twitter); I haven't spent any significant time with it and can't say whether it has merit.

A non-profit community site driven by its users' interests
I stumbled into Tildes yesterday. Account creation is by invite only at the moment (still waiting for one), but it looks like a great platform. It reminds me a lot of old reddit, but there are some nice twists on some core features. Specifically, I love the idea of hierarchical communities (e.g., gaming > gaming.tabletop and programming > programming.languages).
