Speaking about Asia in general, you typically get way better deals on the ground. Booking via booking.com and the likes, especially airbnb, you pay a large premium. If you are only going to Bali for 2 weeks, use those. If staying for 2 months or more, then book with a page like that for the first 2-3 days and then rent a bike and check out homestays on your own. That's what I first did when arriving in Bali and I found a great place. If you are thinking of Bali in particular you can dm me for specific places that I liked.
