You say you are using the Word app on an iPad but it is not clear where you are saving your documents. Could be OneDrive, could be iCloud drive, could be dropbox, etc... Whichever it is, I would suggest opening a browser, going to the website for that cloud sotrage service (office.com for onedrive, icloud.com for icloud drive, dropbox.com for dropbox) and then review the documents there. I am thinking that perhaps your local files are just confused and you should disconnect the cloud storage app deleting all local files, then reinstall to have it sync again.
