That is not necessarily the case in this scenario. Booking.com is NOT Airbnb and with booking, many accommodation providers take care of payment themselves. So in certain types of accommodation, it is quite common on booking.com that people will reach out to you via whatsapp and discuss payment.

I only pay booking.com or agoda.com when I book a hotel room. I have never been asked o pay elsewhere, unless to pay at the hotel when check in.
