I can vouch for libro.fm not using DRM. If the author of a book I'm looking for isn't available there, there's a good chance the author made it an Audible exclusive which means DRM which means proprietary player which means you can't legally back it up or play it with whatever audio player you want.

I haven't tried it, but Sanderson is working with Speechify, which said they'd give authors the other-industry-standard rate of 70%.
