I made use of skyscanner.net, google.com/travel/flights and momondo.co.za to compare prices when purchasing tickets recently. I scanned those sights daily with added alerts for months as to find the best prices only to eventually purchase the tickets direct from the airline. There were a few creative travel options presented by those sites which at first glance made it seem a lot cheaper than booking direct flights, but I found that most if not all the cheap options did not include luggage. By adding each airlines additional price for luggage, the extended travel time, and also, the added stress of reviews dealing with refunds made my mind up that it wasn't worth dealing with them in the end.
