If purchases are not critical for this research, you can see past concurrent players on Steam Charts. For each game this can be also viewed in the "graph" tab on SteamDB. Maybe you are able to draw conclusions from these sources. Though I fear that involves loads of manual work to obtain data. Especially if you want the data on a "silver platter", since website scraping is typically frowned upon (e.g. Forbidden in the site's terms, etc.).
