    arXiv is a free distribution service and an open-access archive for scholarly articles.
    1) Check the arXiv. This is a place scientists publish pre-publication copies of their papers, usually at the stage they are submitted but before peer review and editing. At this stage the authors are the only copyright holders, so there is no infringement. They may be under difference licenses, but generally very permissive. The papers may not fully represent the final copy (notably for style), but are often 1-1 as far as content goes. Originally only for physics, now there are versions for many other fields as well. The original intent was to prove your work in competitive fields at time of submission, so someone who got published through a faster review process couldn't trump your results.
