Will thai airways not allow me to board if I don't have a return ticket ? I read a 30 day visa is free if you can show a return ticket. Anyone with experience in this ?

I was recently prevented from checking in by Finnair as did not have a return ticket. Had to quickly book a flight to Singapore whilst at the airport. Used lastminute.com and found options where you could pay a premium to be able to get 90% of ticket price as a voucher if you cancel. I ended up around $25 down. I then used the voucher towards hotel on my next trip.
