Start looking into something like JSON. It will let you save data to files and interact with a bunch of online services. There are a few sites that aggregate APIs you can use like APIList. If you start getting to a point where json doesn't seem the right tool for the job, maybe you need to look at SQL databases, you'll figure it out when you get there.
