Obsidian.md Quoll Writer TiddlyWiki Kanka.io wereturtle.github.io ghostwriter
  1. A second brain, for you, forever. Obsidian is a powerful knowledge base that works on top of a local folder of plain text Markdown files.

  2. Focus on your words not the interface.
I use QuollWriter, which is also meant for people writing novels, for the same reasons. I went with QuollWriter because it is free and open source.

  3. a non-linear personal web notebook
    Pricing:
    • Open Source
I use Obsidian portal for my public/player-facing side of my game and a tiddly wiki for the GM side. This lets me link to things that probably shouldn't go up on a public-facing website due to copyright as well as keep offline backups, but write things in Tiddly Wiki then cut-and-paste it into OP. The formatting differences between the two are annoying, but minor.

  4. Kanka.
    Pricing:
    • Open Source
I'd like to drop another big fat recommendation for Kanka; I had been researching various campaign management solutions off-and-on, so when a thread on the topic appeared here 3 months ago I took a deeper dive into it and made a summary of what I found. The short version is if you're looking for something more than OneNote/Google Doc-level, Kanka frankly beats the pants off everything else available as a free product. (and is comparable with other services at the paid level) It's even open-source, so if you want to set up your own personal server - or just like having the option in case the service ever goes belly-up - you can. (this is important for me, as I want to keep this stuff around for the rest of my life as a record of our adventures) On top of this, Kanka has a great little community on Discord, where users and the devs are quick with tips and help, and feature requests are frequently discussed and put forward. I was leery of moving to an online service, but I've been very happy since jumping on with Kanka.

  5. NOTE: wereturtle.github.io ghostwriter has been discontinued.
A distraction-free Markdown editor for the desktop
For actual worldbuilding and brainstorming I use vim and vimwiki. For note-taking or writing long texts, I use ghostwriter.
