Does anyone knows how Zotero find and automatically download the relevant PDF files?

The workflow you mention is correct; one way to save a step is to use the Zotfile plugin's "attach new file" feature to grab the most-recently-downloaded file from your downloads folder and attach it to a selected item. See download info and documentation at http://zotfile.com.

Second, the "Find available PDF" feature works by providing access to legal, openly-available copies of articles (either because they are Open Access or because an institutionally-deposited manuscript is available as a result of a publishing agreement). The feature uses data from https://unpaywall.org and, as a result, will also not locate PDFs that are restricted by copyright. That's why it typically doesn't work with SciHub material.
