    Looking around a bit, Kaspersky offers a free version that looks like just a Bitdefender-style barebones AV engine. I'll probably try that out, see how it is on popups etc. If it's no good, I might try going back to Avast, which used to have a pretty good zero-intrusions mode IIRC, or just uninstall everything and let MS Defender eat my lunch disk active time.
