Another thing we did recently is pay for a pro dm to take us through a new game. My son (and me) is a big avatar the last airbender fan and a new ttrpg launched based on that ip and the company (magpie games https://magpiegames.com/curated-play/) runs curated sessions of these to help you start to understand the system and its super fun. This is all done via the Internet and we use roll 20 (https://roll20.net/) and zoom both are super easy to use and make playing rpgs easy.
