I get kind of annoyed with that too, not so much the DNA part because science/labs found factual information rather than family lore. But otherwise I am literally building a tree for ancestry.com that I allow other people to see/use. The minimum monthly service right now is $24.99, for me to fill in information to help their other customers. Not to mention they DNA Trait questionnaires where you answer questions to help them link genetics and traits. For example they have questions like, can you smell asparagus in your pee, do you have a cleft chin, do you sneeze in the sun, beard pattern and thickness etc. So again, I am paying for a service, answering their questions, building a tree and doing research that encourages other members to buy their service so they can access my work (and others). All for $25 a month. I'd keep the service longer if it were like $5, that feels reasonable to access all the info and connect with other people who enjoy tracing their ancestry.
