Where can I buy an O/S for my laptop cheap but legal?

Manjaro Lubuntu
  1. Manjaro Linux is a linux distribution which is based on arch linux. It uses the PACMAN package manager.
You can try Manjaro: https://manjaro.org/ which isn't difficult but might require reading some guides and using the support forums more often than you would with Windows.

  2. Lubuntu is a fast and lightweight operating system with a clean and easy-to-use user interface. The core of the system is based on Linux and Ubuntu. Lubuntu uses the minimal desktop LXDE, and a selection of light applications.
Or, you can try Linux which will only cost you the price of a cheap 16GB USB stick, which I'm sure everybody has lying around somewhere. Ubuntu is the obvious choice for first timers: https://canonical.com/.
