They also both have the ability to manually set any DNS record for any host. You could set "google.com" to be the IP of your web server for example, but that could cause SSL errors (another topic entirely). For any records set like this, an upstream lookup is never attempted and the server just returns what the record is set to return. The pfsense GUI calls these "host overrides".
