Nobody knew what happened to my grandfather and he never tried to contact anyone in my family or legally divorce my grandmother. Everyone just stopped talking about him. My mom told me all this when I was about 18 or 20. I was able to get enough information about him to track him down through ancestry.com. We found out he passed away in 1984, the year I was born coincidentally, and had remarried some how. No idea if he had any more children but it's a pretty good bet he did.
