Something I've notice the past few years is how annoying it is to look at small highly compressed images. You can go to http://news.google.com and look at the thumbnails to get an idea of what I mean. Part of it is that pictures for digital consumption are taken with the belief that they'll be viewed at high resolution, and part of it is that the images are heavily compressed. It's not just that the detail is gone, but it's replaced with the vague hint of <i>something</i>. Sometimes I feel like I'm looking at GAN generated imagery because my brain is telling me there's something there, but I can't make out what it is.
