However, we do have pretty good artists, some solid animatics of the bigger RCPs, and some pretty decent codefriends. A small, unique, tractable webgame might help market the community, especially if it's built around a good story. A weird, interesting little game like paperclip maximizer or dark room could perform very well - those always seem to get substantial traction. Likewise, a short visual novel with solid... Save for the early oughts timeframe and the lack of an explicitly high fantasy setting, A Dark Room (2013), one of the earlier lo-fi idle games, seems to somewhat fit the bill: given the browser-based interface, a mostly gray scale UI, an on-screen world map (available in the later phases of the game), and the lack of leveling in favor of infinite progression. A Dark Room is one of the first incremental games that came out after Cookie Clicker kicked off the craze, and it's free. Source: 11 months ago

A Dark Room: Another little game that starts simple, with unfolding mechanics, but which doesn't overstay its welcome. Source: about 1 year ago
Start here! --> A Dark Room [1] A Dark Room is awesome. It's also what got my kids hooked on programming once they learned they could use a browser's developer console to write JavaScript to change various in-game variables. It's not quite what you're describing, but it's an amazing game built entirely in ASCII: http://adarkroom.doublespeakgames.com (not playable on mobile). The guy who built the mobile app did a really interesting recording about how the blind community picked up on it in a way that hadn't anticipated thanks to screen readers. - Source: Hacker News / over 1 year ago
Idle Games - they have a tendency to become active if I'm sitting here and things are moving slowly so these can be dangerous. If you want low investment, Universal Paperclips, Kittens Game, A Dark Room, etc. I prefer ones with a 'story' such as it is. There are loads of paid options too. Source: over 1 year ago
A Dark Room is a fun, deceptively simple game that can be played in a browser. It starts as a sort of clicker/idle game then escalates from there. It can be played here. Source: over 1 year ago
There are a lot of great short games in genre. A Dark Room and Candy Box 2 are at least on par with Paperclips. Source: over 1 year ago
Lol. I am sitting alone in a dark room playing A Dark Room. Source: over 1 year ago
Would be great if it has white background like A Dark Room but it's not a requirement. Source: over 1 year ago
If we include "context" when we say story, absolutely... But it's also not needed. FE000000 is my favorite idle game and it has absolutely no story: it's a pure case of numbers go up. That being said A Dark Room, Universal Paperclips, and Your Chronicle are incremental games that either fundamentally wouldn't work without their story, or wouldn't be charming enough to actually play. I quite liked A Dark Room, which I think meets all of your criteria except being "visual focused" (it is basically just text, not really audio). Source: over 1 year ago
I'm not much into video games because got my first PC too late and have been already involved in other hobbies. I don't have X-Box, PlayStation, Netflix, iPhone, accounts in TikTok, Instagram, Discord, Tinder. When was a kid, I used to play console games on Chinese analog of Dandy, so I still like 8 bit esthetic. Once I found in web text game called adarkroom, I liked it because it seemed to me very unusual and... Source: over 1 year ago
Seems like there's a very few projects out there that sort of tell a story, but it's not written at all - I'm thinking of things like A Dark Room, although that's more game than story. Source: almost 2 years ago
I happened to be working on a hacky rendering engine for a toy spin off of the Dark Room game, and eventually my itch at work turned that into mithril.js. But this time, I needed to actually release the thing - and do it properly, with docs and tests and everything - since I needed it for work. Source: almost 2 years ago
Similar in this vein, A Dark Room https://adarkroom.doublespeakgames.com/ Though it is more of a story than the kittens game, not unlike the paperclip maximizer. - Source: Hacker News / almost 2 years ago
Certainly, there are many idle games that do not follow this pattern, largely non-commercial ones. Some start out very minimal indeed, such that you would never guess at the kind of game they grow into. Crank and A Dark Room come to mind. Source: almost 2 years ago
I'm pretty sure you are talking about Armory and Machine. If you want a similar game, A Dark Room is probably the most well known in the "incremental games" genre. Source: almost 2 years ago
Universal Paperclips and A Dark Room had overwhelmingly positive reception and both were in the top games of the year by Forbes. It's the quality of the game that matters, not fancy graphics. Source: almost 2 years ago
