  FYI if your phone can't read QR codes, there's websites where you can upload a photo/screenshot of a QR code (for example: https://zxing.org/w/decode.jspx). There's also other similar websites where you can just hold up the QR code to your computer's webcam, rather than having to upload a file, but just be careful with site permissions!   For using a desktop app, some websites will offer to give you the secret directly, not sure about github since I turned on 2fa years ago. If they only give you a qr code, take a screenshot, drop it into the zxing online decoder and the secret to put in the totp app is the secret query parameter of the URI you get back.   At one point in time over the past 20 years, my 2d barcode did have my SSN# in it. It does not now. Last time I looked at my DL barcode it had previous addresses in it, it does not now.
