Jami.net and tox.chat sort of being the way skype originally was. - Source: Reddit / about 1 month ago
Just heard about Tox today from a podcast: https://tox.chat/ (instant messenger, voice, video, screen share, file share). - Source: Reddit / about 2 months ago
Options are limited. All modern messengers require trust in the company running the server they connect to. So the only way to eliminate needing that trust is to use a messenger that is peer 2 peer (no server). This is limiting though since no server means no offline messaging. I know of one messenger that is encrypted, anonymous (required no identifying info to sign up) and is peer 2 peer. tox.chat. - Source: Reddit / 2 months ago
Sounds like tox could be a good fit. https://tox.chat however it has nothing to do with Tor, just happens to work with it given the right configuration/setup. - Source: Reddit / 4 months ago
Tox has several desktop clients available, even including a CLI one. https://tox.chat https://github.com/Jfreegman/toxic. - Source: Hacker News / 4 months ago
Or you could try Tox . It's Tor based, but I don't know too much about it otherwise. - Source: Reddit / 6 months ago

Not entirely true, apps like Signal, Element, Tox, and some other messaging apps are free and private. Linux distributions (and BSD) such as TAILS OS, Solus and a few hundred others are also free and private. You can also choose to make basic changes like going through your accounts changing all the passwords, setting up 2FA, and locking down the settings every once in a while to increase privacy and security, all... - Source: Reddit / 10 months ago
What would be the advantage of this over Tox? - Source: Reddit / 12 months ago
Pleroma and tox.chat is not hard to use, setting up a riseupVPN is easy as well. I mean, u can create an account on the kolektiva.social if u wanna dip ur toes in the water, or fedi.absturztau.be You will need to use ur riseup email or protonmail though. - Source: Reddit / over 1 year ago
The fedi is steadily growing, every centralised platform has already been replaced: Twitter/Facebook with Pleroma, YouTube with Peertube, Spotify with Whalefunk etc. It's all based on federationism/free-association, also you can purge all of your data permanently and the platforms are VPN friendly. There is also Element.io or tox.chat which are Discord spin-offs that have higher encryption standards than Telegram... - Source: Reddit / over 1 year ago
Reddit is in no way safe, all of your data will be stored and sold to Google, govt agencies and other third parties- as stated in their privacy policy.Other good FOSS and encrypted platforms are Element.io and tox.chat- which is also a good Discord alternative. - Source: Reddit / over 1 year ago

There are some fully decentralized (or distributed) programs, eg. Jami or Tox or Biar but the adoption of these are minimal and the user experience is... Less than optimal. - Source: Reddit / over 1 year ago

You don't need a phone number to use Line Messenger (but to activate encryption, yes) or Tox (encrypted by default) on your desktop, and both can be used on phones too. - Source: Reddit / almost 2 years ago
