I don't think you are "wasting" your time applying to jobs. Try to reach out to companies directly and/or provide a cover letter to let the employees know you are new to this so what can you learn what they want you to know... Source: about 3 years ago

Try here: https://weworkremotely.com/ and https://stackoverflow.com/jobs . Most of these are going to be contractual, salary may be paid either monthly or hourly. You also get an added benefit of not being worked to death with boundaries ( atleast in my case). Got mine through StackOverflow, money's good too xD. Source: over 3 years ago

As a senior PHP dev, I mostly use https://stackoverflow.com/jobs. I especially like the "Quick Apply" feature some of the jobs have, and I tend to avoid any applications that take longer than a few minutes to apply. Source: over 3 years ago

Working harder on making yourself smarter, more skilled, better experienced makes you a good hire, especially if it's in ways you can put on your CV as well. Simply grinding harder at work you already know how to do or what is repetitive is good for your current employer, but not necessarily... - Source: Hacker News / over 3 years ago
For developers there's the "stackoverflow developer story" https://stackoverflow.com/users/story/join and for start-up related roles there is https://angel.co.
