  • LaTeX and AsciiDoc
I'm allergic to LaTeX ;-), but initially used SILE, which is a modern reimagining of TeX/LaTeX. It reads Markdown natively, so I could push the content in directly and style it for the printed page. However, SILE is still very early in development, and I had some major problems with baseline alignment. It turned out to be far less of a pain to do it in InDesign, even with the need to write conversion scripts. Source: 12 months ago
  • Typst, a modern LaTeX alternative written in Rust, is now open source
What are your thoughts on SILE (https://sile-typesetter.org/)? I think it’s the tool roughly in this space, and “write djot -> SILE convertor” is on my hobby todo list. I am 95% sure in the djot part here, but I am fairly naive when it comes to typography, and can’t really estimate the SILE part. Source: about 1 year ago
  • TeXmacs “The Jolly Writer” book now available as pdf download
TeX/LaTeX is so addictive to use ... It's such a quirky and messy ecosystem. So organically grown over decades. Doing any complex layout is a struggle of trial and error and searching for advise, there's so many ways to do the same thing, you end up combining two dozens sometimes subtly incompatible packages, you end up gardening your own templates over time with meticulously embedded commentary to keep the... - Source: Hacker News / over 1 year ago
  • Ask HN: LaTeX is great. Has anyone tried to build something better?
I actually have really enjoyed SiLE[0] as a replacement. The only caveat being that it has no where near the ecosystem that LaTeX has built up over the years. I do think that it is better under the hood than LaTeX though and much easier to customize. [0]: https://sile-typesetter.org/. - Source: Hacker News / over 1 year ago
  • Writing my PhD using groff
Simon Cozens spent some time writing a new typesetter called SILE:

  • I love LaTeX. I hate LaTeX
Take a look at https://sile-typesetter.org/. It literally reuses some core C libraries from TeX/LaTeX, and glues them together in a different way using Lua, keeping Lua as the only language available. Notably, SILE recently achieved the long overdue milestone of math/equations support (https://sile-typesetter.org/2021/09/sile-0-12-0-is-released). Obviously, open-source. - Source: Hacker News / almost 2 years ago
  • LibreOffice Writer crashes when there's too many images. Is there any way around?
The whole point of tools like LaTeX is to edit a document without worrying too much with the visual. The problem of LaTeX is that it is too big and too complex, maybe we could have something smaller and simpler, but maintaining similar firepower, perhaps SILE is a good candidate. • Your Pains with LaTeX
Are you aware of Sile? https://sile-typesetter.org/ It has a similar goal. Source: about 2 years ago
  • mdtopdf -- a latex clone in under 850 Loc?
While a neat toy, this SILE v0.12.0 seems to mostly drop everything I love about LaTeX and mostly keeps the things that annoy me about it. (why must I enter glyphs that aren't available on a standard keyboard directly for very common things like quotation marks? Why is the macro definition both extremely limited? Why doesn't it seem to have something to prevent me from typing % at the end of every line just to... Source: over 2 years ago
  • From a PL perspective, how significant are the "shortcomings" of LaTeX?
A bit more alive alternative to TeX is https://sile-typesetter.org/. It does not support math typesetting yet unfortunately. Source: almost 3 years ago
  • Finl Is Not LaTeX
Recently I have been also thinking about TeX's internals, also because I feel the pain points you describe in at https://www.finl.xyz/. I have too thought about experimenting with TeX rewrites/alternatives and particularly in Rust. I don't know if you are aware, but finl has been also submitted to Lobsters (https://lobste.rs/s/udu5oe/finl_is_not_latex_reinventing_latex_for). One of the comments mentions SILE... - Source: Hacker News / almost 3 years ago
  • On the LaTeX3e language
There have been plenty of new document typesetting systems developed since TeX and laTeX appeared. Besides HTML and browsers, everyone here knows Markdown and I'll mention Sile and Pollen as ones that I personally have at least downloaded, and we have a person in this group who posts about TeXmacs. But every one of these systems runs into the problem that the job is very hard indeed. Breaking ASCII into... Source: almost 3 years ago
