I use Leechblock and Selfcontrol for Macintosh (I think the Windows version is "SelfRestraint" but I haven't got a Windows machine running on the internet.) They help, but they're not the same thing. (Maybe I can talk the LeechBlock folk into adding an option. Source: 20 days ago

Maybe you could look into how https://selfcontrolapp.com does it? It’s on GitHub. Source: about 1 month ago
If you on the mac try this https://selfcontrolapp.com/. Source: 2 months ago
When I was doing EECS at Berkeley I would regularly use this app to stop myself from possibly doing anything other than studying. Seeing as you are behind in your classes and yet on Reddit, you may need it. Block reddit, block all social media, block youtube if you don't use it to study, do nothing but school until you are back on track. Good luck. Source: 4 months ago
I’ve used this app called Self Control (https://selfcontrolapp.com) in the past when I was a student and needed to finish assignments on deadlines and not screw around online for too long. Essentially, you set what websites to block for a certain amount of time, say 30 minutes, and for the that set time (you can control when it starts), you cannot access those sites, no ifs, ands, or buts about it. You just have... Source: 4 months ago
This app: https://selfcontrolapp.com/ I don't quite know how it works, but it allows me to setup a website block list that I can't get around. I'm sure if I really tried I could figure out what it changed and get around the block, but 1) then it would defeat the purpose and 2) that takes effort that I don't want to spend. Then I put my phone in the other room, and voila! 95% of my distractions are out the window. - Source: Hacker News / 4 months ago
Been there - still am. self-control (https://selfcontrolapp.com/) is the nuclear tool in my anti-scrolling arsenal. If you figure out how to get around it please do not tell me - it's the best thing I've found for completely shutting myself out of youtube (and chess websites - bullet chess is a similar drug for me). Disclosure - I'm full time working on software that arms people with better tools for fighting... - Source: Hacker News / 5 months ago
This one I know where to download! https://selfcontrolapp.com/. Source: 5 months ago
I use an app called Self Control that’s amazing. You can input whatever websites distract you and start a timer that will completely restrict opening those websites until the timer runs out. Even if you delete the app from your computer, shut it down or restart, it doesn’t matter. Https://selfcontrolapp.com/. Source: 5 months ago
Then use Self Control like u/theofficialLlama suggested https://selfcontrolapp.com. Source: 6 months ago
Selfcontrol is free - even if it was $1, it would pay more 1000x for itself, for obvious reasons. Source: 6 months ago
If you are using mac, consider using [this app](https://selfcontrolapp.com). I sometime unconsciously open reddit or youtube via safari, and then wasting hours of my time. By turning this app on, it'll block reddit.com and youtube.com or any website you add. so, you wont be able to accidentally slacking of. Source: 6 months ago
Use the app called Self Control to block access to websites that distract you for set periods of time. (This is a Mac app. If you need a Windows app, unfortunately I don't know what to recommend. If someone knows of an equivalent to this app for Windows, please let me know as well.). Source: 7 months ago
I use https://selfcontrolapp.com/ to block websites that offer a quick dopamine hit, like HN. I put my phone in do-not-disturb mode. I block focus time on Google Calendar and set myself to be DND on Slack during that time. Jira actually helps, but I set some time aside to organize it, typically when I know I can be interrupted because it doesn't require much focus. Split every task into multiple subtasks. This... - Source: Hacker News / 7 months ago
Almost certainly not mod condoned but for those interested there's a Mac app called Self Control (https://selfcontrolapp.com) that allows you to block certain websites for a certain period of time to get some work done. Works after a reboot, and you really have to put in the work to get access to the sites before the time is up. Source: 8 months ago
Not sure if you are on Mac or PC - here is a free Mac app that blocks you from using apps (games) for a certain amount of hours—you can increase it to however long you want so, it’s a good way to get started. If you’re on PC, I’m sure a quick Reddit or Google search will find a similar app for you. Best of luck! Source: 8 months ago
Hey! If you are a MacOS user there is an app called SelfControl. You can choose which websites to block and for what period of time. Funny thing is that you are not able to turn it off and only one way is to reinstall whole laptop. Maybe there is something for Windows laptops, but I don't know about it. Source: 9 months ago
I've only ever used SelfControl for temporarily blocking reddit when I was writing my thesis, but it's not a router-level blocker. So I can't give any recommendations, sorry. Source: 9 months ago
I like the idea but I think it would appeal more to workers, so cutting off the Internet isn't a great idea. Maybe just require people to use an on-site computer (with only certain sites available) or make them download and use SelfControl [1] or a similar app. In a broader sense, I do think the "manipulate space for your needs" market will grow in the future, especially as remote work continues to become a viable... - Source: Hacker News / 10 months ago
