Super interesting project. I also started once a project to index food and their ingredients via gpt. The inaccuracy let me abandon the project. But never tried the new gpts for that. One great resource is also: https://world.openfoodfacts.org/. - Source: Hacker News / 3 months ago

But I also uploaded my app on Play Store and Samsung Galaxy store. On play store I was not getting any downloads (I was aware that it's going to happen so it was not a disappointment) but on Galaxy Store I got around 50 downloads within few months and now just going to complete 1000 downloads (lol I didn't even expect it). I was enjoying android development to I decided to keep this app updated as my hobby... Source: 10 months ago
Have a look at Open Food Facts. It’s crowd-sourced data, so no guarantees if the particular restaurant you’re interested is (yet) listed, but you can contribute too 🙂. Source: about 1 year ago
A year ago, we expanded our branded product coverage to include UK, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and Ireland. We also promised that we would look to incorporate more data sources in the future. Today we are happy to announce the completion of Phase 1 for expanding our global coverage. We have incorporated data provided by the Open Food Facts contributors, drastically increasing our coverage in Europe, and... Source: about 1 year ago
Open Food Facts – provides open data about food products, listing eco scores and nutrition scores for products as well as other useful information. Not explicitly political per se, but this project is meant to hold companies accountable and provide information about their products they themselves don't want to provide. Source: about 1 year ago

Open Food Facts (a community working to provide open food product information) has a series of minigames where people review OCR data such as identifying food labels and brands. Source: about 1 year ago
The best project I have come across that has a commitment to open data is Open Food Facts. Their scanner app is quite good and has a lot of niceties. However, it is not really directed towards vegans specifically, so it shows a lot of other information about nutrition and whatnot beyond whether an item is vegan or not. Therefore, there could be an "opening in the market", so to speak, for a vegan-focused app that... Source: over 1 year ago
Close, https://world.openfoodfacts.org/ and https://world.openbeautyfacts.org/, by the same association. Crowd-sourced databases that you can query scanning the barcode using their app. The quality and availability of the information you can find varies greatly, but it's very easy to contribute. You won't find much that is not already written on the label though. - Source: Hacker News / over 1 year ago

Open food facts tries to solve this problem and have a good philosophy behind their data. They also have a great scanner app which lists vegan status among other interesting facts about the food. Source: about 2 years ago

I would recommend the open food facts app to everyone looking to see facts about the ingredients in their food, including whether it is vegan. It's a global, open source project that uses data submitted by users so that it can remain open and free. Many vegan scanner apps have proprietary datasets and do not share their data with the community at large, which is what should be done, in my opinion. OFF has some... Source: over 2 years ago
