  • Planning to install Gentoo to learn how OS in general and Linux in particular really works
Well, it depends on what your aim is. If you want a Linux-based system that can be used as a daily driver, then Gentoo is certainly a reasonable choice. But if you're not particularly interested in using the system once you've finished installing, then Linux From Scratch is probably more appropriate. Gentoo is not primarily an educational tool, whereas Linux From Scratch is. Source: 11 months ago
  • Fedora and Debian are the same, change my mind
Https://linuxfromscratch.org/ this has a guide for how to make a standard Linux base, by hand, but will give you some ideas on how packaging and dependency management works. Source: 12 months ago
  • Linux boots into terminal, cannot access GUI, and apt (and therefore everything else) is broken
I have broken my linux mint 19.3 cinnamon installation while attempting lfs (I believe while attempting this). Now, whenever I boot up my system, I am met with a terminal that says:. Source: about 1 year ago
  • I'd like to interview redditors here about their favorite distro release.
I'm daily driving Gentoo GNU/Linux (https://gentoo.org). I prefer it over other GNU/Linux distributions because it allows me to customize the operating system down to a lower level. I'm also planning on installing Linux From Scratch (https://linuxfromscratch.org) for educational purposes. However, I might end up daily driving it. I do extremely difficult and tedious activities on my computer just for fun and I... Source: about 1 year ago

  • My director is mad that I accepted another internal position for a 26% raise when he was told he could only give me a 10%
Oh, and one last link: Linux from scratch. Every linux sysadmin, containers or not, should work through that book at least twice (once with, once without systemd). Takes about a week or two if you keep at it, but it's the best investment you'll have ever made in terms of IT skills, by a wide margin. Source: almost 2 years ago
  • Ask HN: What’s the most secure OS for servers? Why?
    Way to roll your own bare-bones. [1] https://linuxfromscratch.org/ [2] https://flylib.com/books/en/2.605.1.108/1/. - Source: Hacker News / about 2 years ago

  • New to the scene
If instead you want a full understanding of the system, have a look at Linux From Scratch. I wouldn't recommend it as a daily driver, and especially not as a first distro, but it's good as a learning exercise. Source: almost 3 years ago
  • Creating a Linux distribution from scratch
Much of the packages used and initial setup is based on linuxfromscratch.org, so if you are familiar with that then you may be interested. This will go over how to turn something like this into a full fledged distribution that you can distribute. Source: almost 3 years ago
  • Is there a known number of topics to study to become a Linux sysadmin?
One thing that helped me a lot back in the day (early aughts) was the Linux From Scratch (LFS) project . Haven't looked at it in years, but it looks like it's still maintained. https://linuxfromscratch.org/. Source: about 3 years ago

  • Made my own Linux from Scratch distro at age 13
If you're in it for the minimalism, LFS is a little overkill. It's mainly for learning. That being said, if you're interested, head to http://linuxfromscratch.org/. Source: about 3 years ago
  • What advice do you have for my son who is into Linux?
This might be too advanced now, but eventually I would point him at http://linuxfromscratch.org/. Source: about 3 years ago
