  Well, it depends on what your aim is. If you want a Linux-based system that can be used as a daily driver, then Gentoo is certainly a reasonable choice. But if you're not particularly interested in using the system once you've finished installing, then Linux From Scratch is probably more appropriate.   Oh, and one last link: Linux from scratch. Every linux sysadmin, containers or not, should work through that book at least twice (once with, once without systemd).
